Hailed by the New York Times as "spellbinding", baritone Michael Miller is a young and exciting talent in classical music. Michael has sung regionally with young artist programs such as The Glimmerglass Festival and Opera Theatre of Saint Louis. Most recently, Michael joined Palm Beach Opera as an apprentice artist in their 2018-2019 main stage season.
The 2019-2020 season includes Michael's debut with the Florida Grand Opera, joining their Studio. While in residence, Michael will perform the roles of Masetto (Don Giovanni), Prince Yamadori and the Official Registrar (Madama Butterfly) and Marullo (Rigoletto). In addition to his main stage roles, Michael will perform in concerts and events throughout Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In the summer of 2020, Michael joins Chautauqua Opera. He will appear as Faiz in Thumbprint and Virgil T in The Mother of Us All.
At home in both standard repertoire and contemporary opera, Michael's roles have spanned from the title role of Eugene Onegin to the transformative role of Joseph DeRocher in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking. While studying at the University of Michigan, Michael appeared as Owen Hart in Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking as well as Curio in Händel's Giulio Cesare. Before graduating in 2016, he appeared in Michigan's double-bill production of L'heure espagnole (Ramiro) and Gianni Schicchi (Marco). Michael trained at the Seagle Music Colony in Schroon Lake, NY for three summers, where he performed the title role of Figaro in Rossini's Il barbiere di Siviglia.
Among Michael's distinctions, he has competed regionally and was awarded prizes such as the George L. Hackett award in the Singer's Club of Cleveland's 25th annual S. Livingston Mathers competition. In Michigan, Michael has won the Anna Chepakis Friends of Opera competition at the University of Michigan, as well as the Michigan Federation of Music Clubs Elizabeth Gardner Competition and the Charolette Ruppel Memorial Voice Award from the Birmingham Musicale.
Michael recently received his Master of Music in Opera Performance at the Boston Conservatory at Berklee and is a student of Rebecca Folsom. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a Bachelor of Music in Voice Performance, where he studied under Stephen Lusmann. Originally from Meadville, Pennsylvania, Michael began his studies with Vicki Jamison of Allegheny College. He has had the pleasure of singing in productions and elite choirs across the East Coast including performances at the Kennedy Center and Carnegie Hall.
